What is Ulcerative Colitis?
UC is a type of bowel disease that produces inflammation and sores or ulcers along the inside lining of the large intestine, also called
the bowel, or colon. The sores may interfere with the normal digestive process. Most people with UC need to take prescription
medicines to help manage their symptoms.
What is Lialda (Lee-ALL-da)?
Lialda is a prescription medicine for patients with active, mild to moderate ulcerative colitis. Lialda can help you achieve induction
of remission.
In clinical trials, many people taking Lialda experienced remission, including:
- Less rectal bleeding
- Fewer trips to the bathroom (i.e. fewer bowel movements)
- Reduced inflammation/an improvement in the inside lining of the colon
Who is Lialda for? Lialda may be taken by adults 18 years or older who have active, mild to moderate
ulcerative colitis.
Who should NOT take Lialda?
Anyone who is allergic to mesalamine or any of the ingredients in Lialda or salicylates such as aspirin
Lialda has not been studied for ulcerative colitis in children younger than 18 years of age
What should I know before starting Lialda? Tell your doctor if you:
- Are allergic to sulfasalazine, salicylates or mesalamine
- Have kidney disease or liver disease
- Are pregnant, intend to become pregnant or are breastfeeding
- Are taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
- Are taking either of the following medications:
– Azathioprine
– 6-mercaptopurine
Tell your doctor about all your medicines, including over-the-counter drugs, vitamins and herbal products.
What are possible side effects of Lialda? The most common are:
- Headache
- Flatulence
- Increased liver enzymes
- Hair loss
- Itching
How should I take Lialda?
- Take Lialda exactly as your doctor tells you. Your doctor may tell you to take 2 to 4 tablets once a day
- Lialda is taken once a day with food
- Swallow Lialda tablets whole. Do not chew, break or crush them
