Now, Two Complementary Options for the Treatment of Ulcerative Colitis (UC)

Shire offers 2 distinct formulations of mesalamine for your patients.

Which patient type is best for Lialda?

For patients who require mesalamine delivered to and throughout the colon3

Lialda is the first and only once-daily oral 5-ASA approved for the induction of remission in patients with active, mild to moderate ulcerative colitis (UC).

Safety and effectiveness of Lialda beyond 8 weeks have not been established.

  • Lialda induces remission with once-daily dosing
  • Lialda combines a pH-dependent, gastro-resistant coating with a tablet core containing 5-ASA with hydrophilic and lipophilic excipients
    • Mesalamine begins to be released at a pH of 7 or greater, normally in the terminal ileum
    • Studies suggest that mesalamine is distributed throughout the colon

Which patient type is best for PENTASA?

For patients who require mesalamine delivered throughout their small and large intestine13

PENTASA is indicated for the induction of remission and for the treatment of patients who have mildly to moderately active ulcerative colitis.

  • Controlled-release PENTASA is a moisture-activated oral 5-ASA that predictably releases mesalamine throughout the small and large intestine13,14
  • As moisture enters the PENTASA semipermeable microspheres, mesalamine is released at a virtually constant rate throughout the small intestine and the entire colon14
